- Bryan, I got the specs and REMM.sys upgrade. Many thanks. DESQview sounds
- better and better. 9 560K partitions can be run concurrently with sufficient
- RAMpage memory, keystroke macros, auto-dialer, DOS services, and cut-&-paste
- text between partitions. Also you can setup more partitions than you have
- memory for and they will be automatically swapped out to the HD and restored
- where you left off when you recall them. I am sure glad I waited for the
- RAMpage.
- Dave Hoagland says that AST is going to have a piggy back card for the
- RAMpage II that makes it into a multi-function card, which may appeal to some
- folks. Ted

- Joan (and others), I've just installed the two rampage boards that we got on
- Friday. One went onto the AT and the onther into the XT. Both machines are now
- 2Meg machines.
-
- There's a fellow here now from AST (who asked to remain anonymous) who brought
- what he calls an "alpha" copy of the new desqview. I am now running 6
- partitions. I have Framework on one, dbase III in another , Lotus in 3, Kedit
- in 4, one empty and ATO in the last.
-
- Lotus has a 700 row by 25 col SS loaded.
- Dbase is running with 3 DBF's and 5 NDX's open
- FW has a copy of the same SS as Lotus open on the desktop, and a
- 30K text file also open
- Kedit has loaded a 100K file.
-
- I can switch partitions quickly and easily. It really appears that I have a
- single multi-tasking 2Meg machine.
- More reports later as I continue testing.
-
- This reminds me of about 10 yrs ago when I changed jobs from a company with
- single user DOS on a 360/50 to a co with DOS/VS on a 370/148!

- Paul... happy to help! On the slowdown question, two comments. First, DESQview
- allows you to divide time between windows as you wish, so for any given two
- windows you can allocate resources to suit yourself... at least at the time you
- run DV, not from within DV, though. Thus, you can easily have a comm program
- with just about full speed and still have some access to another window!
-
- Now, remember, if you are running a comm program at 1200 baud, or even 2400
- baud, having other windows open is probable not going to slow down up/downloads
- as the comm bottleneck is still the modem speed... the program itself will be
- getting the resources it need to keep up in all likelihood.

- Do you have DV 1.2? If so, does it correct the problem I had, when I could run
- ATO in my Compaq (when the 1200b was installed), that ATO would blink the
- border of the screen on and off when it was running in the background, even
- with the ATO /t switch?

- Vern, I still use DD when I want multitasking also! While the idea of greater
- partition space with DV is intriguing, DD quietly DOES THE JOB, with no fuss or
- bugs -- ATO runs especially well in the background with /t. DD also used the
- AT's SYS REQ key for one of the functions IBM intended, as a Partition Toggle,
- DV didn't bother even tho the AT Tech Ref carefully explains how to do this for
- any # of partitions. I guess the EGA & DD combo isn't great, but for std mono,
- color or herc, it's just fine.

- I don't know about DesqView 1.00, but under 1.20, it runs without any
- indication at all unless you have 2 less than full screen windows open at the
- same time. It really works.........Norm

- I forgot to mention that I have created separate macros for opening each window
- and my auto-start macro consists of those macros. That way, you can use
- Control-Break to stop execution of the Auto-start macro, but still have macros
- to open the windows you desire......Norm

- Yes, DD does the job. It didn't when I first tried it, but they seem to be
- working hard at making it a stable product. One thing about it I especially
- like is its support of two monitors. That way, I can watch ATO download
- messages on one monitor while I'm putzing around with another program on the
- other monitor.

- That's another thing I like about DD. You can suspend either task whenever you
- want. A program running as the only active task takes about as long as it would
- without DD. With a second task running, there's no formula to tell you have
- much longer it will take.
-
- Another factor is the facility to change the dispatching priorities of the
- tasks. This is accomplished through parameters in a DDCONFIG.SYS file. You can
- specify equal or two-to-one for one of the tasks, or for the foreground or
- background task.

- So do you suspend the bbs while working on something else then reactivate it
- when the phone rings? Seems like if you were running a compile things could
- get mighty slow!

- Yes, I do suspend the BBS, but not often. I don't like ringing phones. There's
- not that much benefit to suspending BBS when it's waiting for a call. The thing
- that slows the system down the most is FORMAT and DISKCOPY. I don't really like
- using either of those under DD.

- Well, I was hoping no one would ask for a recommendation. For my environment,
- DD suits me better. If you want to take advantage of expanded memory, DV is the
- only choice I know. I really can't recommend either one unless you are willing
- to spend some time tailoring your environment and getting used to the

- I have received my new memory card from Compaq and can now happily report that
- I am up and running with 2.3 meg of addressable RAM and a 1.5 meg ram disk.
- DesqView 1.2 is working flawlessly ? with one window at 545K and others with up
- to 480K. I can do so many things at one time, I'm getting tired. I feel like
- I've got 4 or 5 computers at my fingertips. Here are a few tips for those who
- have yet to experience this pleasure.
-
- 1) When setting up any comm programs, make sure you mark them as non-swappable.
- The manual mentions this as being important, but doesn't tell you why. If you
- don't, your program will not find the com port.
-
- 2) If your screen should suddenly darken, don't panic, hit the Alt key and it
- will come back. I don't know if this has anything to do with Burnout, which I
- have loaded before DesqView, however the screen blanks at times when it
- shouldn't.
-
- 3) Quarterdeck has prepared certain loaders (xx-load.com) for certain programs.
- If you have any of those programs, it is important to use the loader to start
- up the program. Although the manual implies that you can not use batch files
- with these, I have succesfully used the xx-load.com xx.exe statement in a batch
- file.
-
- 4) Ready!, when loaded in expanded memory, before starting DesqView, does NOT
- work. My machine hangs and requires the BOS. Doesn't really make much
- differnce, because with DesqView, the best way to use Ready! is in its own
- window. Ready! even shows up on the Add-a-Program Menu.
-
- There appears to be very little degradation of download speed when operating in
- the background. I have not changed the performance specs with regard to
- background/foreground processing.
-
- I will be glad to share my experiences with anyone having any difficulty. I
- might be able to help.
